The Lord is with you…do not be afraid!

Today is the feast of the Annunciation, the patronal feastday for the Sisters of Notre Dame around the world. Today’s Scripture readings remind us of the origins of the “Hail Mary.” The angel Gabriel said to Mary, “The Lord is with you…” We can only imagine her internal reaction. As a woman full of grace, she was probably deeply aware of the divine presence. But Mary was also an adolescent. Scripture reveals that Gabriel sensed her discomfort. His next words were “Do not be afraid…” In these days of pandemic and uncertainty, we have many opportunities to embrace the divine presence and to release our fears. Social distancing may be enabling divine closeness and awareness. The Sisters of Notre Dame pray that each of our readers may discover new graces during these days of Lent–springtime–and God’s presence this Annunciation day…
