Sr. Mary Kathleen Burns
Silver Jubilee, 25 Years
Sr. Mary Kathleen Burns is the youngest of twelve children who grew up in Simi Valley. She attended public schools but developed a strong faith from seeking answers to questions her non-Catholic friends asked. During high school, she saw the Sisters of Notre Dame every day at their convent near her school. Curious, she leapt at the chance to attend a discovery day at the provincial house in Hidden Valley.
“I think that was the Holy Spirit because I had no connection with the sisters except for seeing them,” she explained. “I never talked to them.” Sr. Kathleen entered the novitiate at Notre Dame Center upon graduation from high school as part of the first class at the new provincial house in Thousand Oaks.
She has served as an elementary school teacher, a high school religion teacher, local superior at Notre Dame Center, and vocations director. In addition to her teaching credentials and a liberal studies degree, she earned a bachelor degree in Theology in Rome. Today Sr. Kathleen is formation director at Providence House, which includes organizing a weekly bible study and leading retreats. “The retreat work is the creative side of me,” she said. “I am at heart a teacher and it’s very life-giving.”
