Sr. Dwina Marie Towle
Golden Jubilee, 50 Years
Sr. Dwina Marie was born in California and grew up in Culver City back when it was mostly either vacant land or movie lots. She is the middle of five children who were born over a span of twenty years. As a young girl she knew that she wanted to become a nun and befriended several Sisters of Notre Dame when she attended Notre Dame Academy.
She entered the novitiate after high school, enrolled in college and later began a series of ministries that included three years as head of the sewing department, seven years in maintenance at the provincial center, nine years teaching kindergarten and primary grades, and 15 years cooking. She became a certified nurse assistant and later a licensed vocational nurse serving in the Health Care Center. Each of these jobs required specific training and presented unique challenges.
“When I was a cook at Notre Dame Academy, we asked a German sister who lived with us how she did it. She said ‘No matter what they ask you to do, you take your heart with you. Then you will always like what you are doing,’ ” said Sr. Dwina Marie. “When you think about it, that’s the only way to live.”
